Anchor Hill Communications awarded Key Patent for Communications Technology May 24, 2014 A key patent enabling long-range or low-power transmission of high-data-rate signals in mobile links has been awarded to Anchor Hill Communications. U.S. Patent No. 8718203 covers a technique for training an LMS, or similar, equalizer in a quasi-coherent receiver. This enables the use of quasi-coherent reception for mobile applications while maintaining the benefit of channel fading equalization for broadband single-carrier systems. The reduction in PAPR obtained from utilizing a single-carrier waveform allows increased average transmit power, the use of quasi-coherent reception provides robust communications and high link reliability in mobile applications, and efficient equalization allows broadband transmission in frequency-selective mobile channels. The combination of the three characteristics allows longer range for high-data-rate transmission in mobile fading channels. Previously many systems had to rely on OFDM or similar waveforms to provide high-rate transmission in frequency-selective channels. The high PAPR associated with OFDM results in a reduction in average transmit power which reduces range. Systems utilizing Anchor Hill's AH1000-MPRE Mobile Phase Recovering Equalizer make use of this new, patented, technology to achieve reliable long-range communications in dynamic fading.
